Remember how long summer felt as a child? Six weeks of summer vacation used to feel like an entire lifetime. A day at the beach expanded endlessly. Two hours of playtime felt infinite. But by the time you reach adulthood, summer flies by. A week vanishes before you notice it. Years blur together into an indistinguishable mass.
This isn't your imagination. It's neuroscience. The brain's perception of time is relative, not absolute. When you're young, everything is new. Your brain is constantly processing novel information — new sensations, new experiences, new learning. This cognitive load makes your perception of time expand. The novelty creates density in memory. When you recall summer as a child, you have thousands of distinct memories. The summer feels long in retrospect because it feels full.

You pack more experiences into those two weeks than into months of normal life. Yet during the vacation itself, it seems to pass quickly. But when you return and try to remember it, those two weeks expand backward. In memory, they feel like two months.
This is the "Holiday Paradox." During the vacation, time passes quickly because you're focused on immediate experience. But in memory, the vacation is dense. You have hundreds of distinct memories, photographs, conversations, sensations. All of that data means the vacation is stored in rich, detailed form. When you recall it, you have to sort through all of that information, so it takes longer to "play back." Your brain interprets that richer, more complex memory retrieval as a longer period of time.
Now compare that to a normal month at home. During the month, you're not paying particular attention because it's familiar. You skip breakfast thinking about work. The implication is dark: people who live on autopilot, doing the same things in the same ways every day, literally experience less time in life. Not because they're living faster, but because they're encoding less information. Their lives compress in subjective experience. Decades pass that they barely remember. They run out of time without ever really having lived through it.
The Autopilot Trap: Same Commute, Same Meetings, Same Evenings
The autopilot trap is the default mode of adult life. You wake at the same time. You shower in the same way. You follow the same route to work. You sit in the same meetings. You see the same people. You eat lunch at the same time. You commute home. You watch the same shows. You scroll the same apps. You sleep. Repeat.
This isn't laziness. This is efficiency. The brain loves routines because they require less energy. When a behavior becomes automatic, it's stored in the cerebellum rather than requiring active prefrontal cortex processing. It's like the difference between learning to drive (which is cognitively demanding) versus driving a familiar route (which you can do while thinking about something else). Automation is energetically efficient. It frees up your conscious mind for other tasks.
But this efficiency has a cost. The cognitive load of daily existence becomes so low that very little novel information is being encoded. If your entire week consists of the same commute, the same office, the same meetings, the same dinner routine, and the same entertainment, then you're basically replicating the same mental state 52 times a year. You're living the same week repeatedly. You're not living 52 different weeks.
This is how decades disappear. At age 25, you have routines that feel stable and efficient. At age 35, those same routines have created ten years of compressed experience. You can't remember what you did in 2028. You have three or four distinct memories of the entire decade. It felt like two or three years. At 45, another ten years compress into a blur. At 60, you look back and realize that most of your adult life has been one long, undifferentiated stretch of repetition. You ran out of time — subjective time, the time that you actually experience as living — without ever noticing.
The Neuroscience of Temporal Compression
The science here is clear. Neuroscientist David Eagleman has shown that the brain's sense of time is determined by the amount of information being processed. When you process lots of novel information — new places, new people, new challenges — your brain's subjective clock ticks more slowly. Time feels expansive. When you process repetitive information, the opposite happens. Your brain's subjective clock speeds up. Time feels compressed.
Additionally, the memory system relies on distinctive events to create "bookmarks." When something unusual happens, it gets marked in memory. When something is routine, it blurs together with similar memories. This means that years full of distinctive events feel longer in retrospect (good memories, new experiences, changes) while years of repetition feel shorter (boring, routine, unchanging). The compression is real and measurable.
This also explains why months feel shorter the older you get. At 20, a year is 1/20th of your life — a large proportion. The relative scale makes a year feel significant. At 60, a year is 1/60th of your life — much smaller relative scale. But that only accounts for part of the effect. The bigger factor is that a 60-year-old has lived through thousands of repetitions of "a year." The novelty has worn off. The brain stops encoding it carefully. It all blurs together.
Breaking the Pattern: Introducing Friction and Novelty
The antidote to the autopilot trap is not to eliminate all routines — routines are efficient and necessary. The antidote is to intentionally inject novelty and variation into your regular life. This doesn't mean quitting your job or abandoning your schedule. It means creating friction in your patterns.
Take a different route home once a week. Not because it's faster (it might not be), but because the novelty forces your brain to pay attention. Go to a different coffee shop. Try a restaurant you've never tried. Have a conversation with someone you don't usually talk to. Learn something outside your domain. Read a book in a genre you don't usually read. These aren't productivity optimizations. They're memory and time expansion tactics. They force your brain to encode information. They create density in experience.
The goal is not to change your entire life every week. The goal is to puncture the absolute uniformity. A routine job is fine. But within that routine, introduce variation. Different tasks, different collaborators, different approaches. A familiar relationship is fine. But within that relationship, introduce novelty. New experiences, new conversations, new vulnerabilities.
Creating Time Anchors: Memories That Expand Your Life
One practical approach is to create "time anchors" — distinctive events or practices that are so unusual or memorable that they force your brain to create memory bookmarks. These anchors help you structure your years into comprehensible segments rather than one long blur.
These might be: a weekly hike or adventure to a different location, a monthly trip to somewhere unfamiliar, a quarterly challenge or project that requires learning something new, or an annual retreat or reflection period. These anchors don't have to be expensive or time-consuming. The key is that they're distinctive enough that your brain codes them as memorable events.
The result is that your year, instead of being one long blur, becomes divided into segments. You can remember the time between anchors. The structure creates memory density. You feel like you lived more time because, in subjective experience, you did. Your life feels longer and fuller not because you have more hours, but because you have more distinct experiences to remember.
Most people run out of time without realizing it because they never made the time feel real. They lived on autopilot, and now they're 50 and can't account for the last 25 years. The antidote is to stop living as if time is infinite. Introduce variation. Create anchors. Make your life memorable. That's how you reclaim your time from the compression trap.
